Residence 4
Christchurch
This project began with a clear priority — sustainability. The brief called for a flooring solution that could deliver on environmental credentials without compromising on character or quality. Replacing the existing Axminster as part of a broader building renovation, the new carpet needed to honour the period architecture of the home while bringing renewed warmth and visual interest to the spaces it covered.
The answer was a 100% New Zealand wool Axminster from the Glandovey micro-pattern range, laid over recycled wool underlay. Wool by nature is one of the most renewable and biodegradable flooring fibres available and paired with recycled wool underlay and conventional laying methods, the installation was able to meet the sustainability intent of the project without compromise.
The colour specification was where the work became genuinely interesting. The interior called for something that would sit comfortably alongside a stone fireplace, timber trims, and textured wallpaper, all the warmth and texture of a considered period home. What emerged was unexpected: a gold foundation woven through with orange and red flecks, and a soft charcoal lineal pattern running through the body of the carpet. The result reads differently depending on light and angle, rich and grounded in some moments, subtly complex in others.Installed wall to wall across the stair and living areas, the carpet does what the best Axminster does. It completes the room rather than decorating it.
