The dairy hotel
queenstown
The Dairy Private Hotel by Naumi is a boutique 13-room retreat in Queenstown, housed in the town’s original corner store dating from the 1920s. Material Creative led the renovation to transform the historic building into a design-forward getaway, blending old-world charm with eccentric maximalist personality. Custom Carpets developed a bespoke carpet design that underpins this character, adding warmth, sculptural pattern, and a bold visual identity.
design intent
The design brief embraced contrast: rustic alpine influences combined with dramatic, colourful details. The carpet uses a striking tartan pattern in deep blues and reds, evoking a European ski chalet aesthetic, while feeling unexpectedly vibrant and contemporary. The carpet also helps ground the visual energy of bold wallpapers, eclectic furniture, and decorative flourishes, bringing cohesion and texture underfoot.-

In collaboration with the interior design team, we translated their maximalist and nostalgic vision into a carpet that ties together the hotel’s bold design choices. Aligning colours and patterns with the wallpaper, furniture, and architectural elements was a key part of the process. Carpet samples were refined to ensure the tartan motif was precisely scaled and the finish offered both comfort and visual impact in the quirky, design-led space.

outcome
The final carpet defines the character of The Dairy Private Hotel: it’s playful yet rooted, vibrant yet timeless. The bold tartan underfoot complements the hotel’s maximalist interiors and adds a crafted, homely feel in a high-design context. This project is a strong example of how bespoke carpet design can anchor a boutique hotel’s identity, connecting heritage, design, and guest experience in a uniquely Queenstown way.
