naumi q hotel

wellington

‍Located on Cuba Street in the heart of Wellington, Naumi Q Hotel is known for its expressive interiors, award-winning design, and playful, art-inspired personality. The transformation of the historic People’s Palace building into a 62-room boutique hotel is driven by Material Creative’s concept referencing the scientific and artistic revolutions of the early 20th century—where geometry, colour theory, and structured composition converged.‍

Our role was to deliver a custom woven Axminster carpet (80/20 NZ wool blend) that supports this richly layered design language across the hotel’s guest rooms and circulation spaces.

design intent

‍Material Creative’s interiors explore rhythm, structure, and bold colour application—each suite designed with its own palette, materiality, and personality. The carpet needed to operate as a foundational element in this composition: expressive enough to feel intentional within each room type, while harmonising with the dramatic velvet drapery, sculptural furniture, and iridescent wardrobe joinery. The woven Axminster construction allowed the introduction of precise geometric motifs, refined colour transitions, and textural depth that directly align with the project’s post-impressionist influences.‍
  • Material Creative

  • Working alongside Material Creative and the project delivery team, we translated the design concept into a functional flooring solution. Pattern scale, colour selection, and motif geometry were developed to match the spatial cadence of each suite type: Blush King, Oasis King, Habitat King, and Twin Habitat.

Through sampling, loom trials, and palette refinement, the final carpet collection reflects the expressive, layered identity of Naumi while ensuring longevity in a high-traffic context.

  • Construction: Woven Axminster
Fibre blend: 80% New Zealand wool / 20% nylon
    Application: Guest rooms and hallways

outcome

The completed flooring installation delivers a durable and visually appealing foundation for the DoubleTree by Hilton Wellington. It balances the historic significance of the 1928 T&G Building with the requirements of a modern hotel, enhancing both aesthetic character and guest comfort. This project highlights how custom carpet design can support heritage restoration, meet high-performance standards, and contribute to a sophisticated hospitality experience in New Zealand.‍
