THE MICHAEL FOWLER CENTRE

WELLINGTON 1998 & 2007

The Michael Fowler Centre is a cornerstone of Wellington’s civic and cultural precinct, renowned for its iconic architecture, world-class acoustics, and enduring role as a premier performance and conference venue. Conceived as a building to be experienced “in the round,” it offers a powerful dialogue between interior and city through elevated, glazed walkways and generous public foyers.Custom Carpets was involved in two significant carpet installations at the Centre, completed in 1998 and 2007, each responding to the architectural context, artwork, and functional demands of the building at that point in time.

1998 instillation

The 1998 installation comprised a machine-tufted broadloom cut and loop design, manufactured in 100% wool and installed throughout all public areas excluding the auditorium. The design was developed in close collaboration between Dilana Design Group and specifier Lamb Design.A key driver for the carpet design was its relationship to the large-scale textile artworks by Wellington artist Gordon Crook, which line the double-height promenade foyers. The carpet needed to sit comfortably alongside these bold, multi-coloured tapestries, complementing their visual rhythm without competing for attention. The resulting design used texture and tonal variation to anchor the space, reinforcing the Centre’s civic gravitas while maintaining warmth and comfort for patrons.

2007 instillation

In 2007, a new carpet installation was undertaken using a dye-injected 80/20 wool-nylon cut pile construction, reflecting advances in manufacturing and performance requirements. While distinct from the earlier scheme, the design maintained a strong architectural response. The 2007 carpet draws on the linear geometry of the building, with design elements radiating from the central point of the auditorium stage. This approach reinforces the spatial organisation of the Centre, subtly guiding movement through foyers and circulation areas while echoing the radial planning of the performance space itself. As with the earlier installation, the design was a collaborative effort between Dilana Design Group and Lamb Design, ensuring continuity of design intent while responding to contemporary functional needs.

outcome

Across two decades, the carpet installations at the Michael Fowler Centre demonstrate how considered flooring design can evolve alongside a building while respecting its architectural and artistic foundations. Through close collaboration with designers and specifiers, the carpets enhance the Centre’s identity as a welcoming, enduring, and distinctly New Zealand civic space.
